Frequently Asked Questions
What is the SPACE 2027 Team Workshop & Auditions?
1
Our annual Team Workshop & Auditions weekend is an opportunity for dancers to train with SPACE Studios’ Creative Directors, Summer and Cameron, experience a range of choreography, and audition for placement on a SPACE team for the 2027 season.
The workshop and audition is open to everyone, whether you currently dance at SPACE Studios or are completely new to our studio!
Do I have to be a current SPACE Studios dancer to attend?
2
Absolutely not! We welcome dancers from all studios, schools and dance backgrounds. Whether you are a current SPACE dancer, train somewhere else, looking for a new dance experience, or completely new to dancing, we would love to have you join us.
Do I have to audition to attend the workshop?
3
No! The Saturday 5 December workshop is open to everyone, including dancers who simply want to train, learn new choreography and experience classes with Summer and Cameron
We have two age groups:
Junior: 7–12 years
Senior: 13–21 years
Age eligibility is calculated as of 31 December 2026. Please select the correct age group when booking.
4
What ages can attend?
Do I need to book separately for the auditions?
5
No separate booking is needed if you select the correct registration option!
When booking, you can choose between:
AUDITION/WORKSHOP (Junior or Senior): For dancers who want to attend the Saturday workshop and audition for a SPACE team on Sunday.
WORKSHOP ONLY (Junior or Senior): For dancers who want to attend the Saturday workshop but do not wish to audition.
The Saturday workshop costs $65 per dancer, including $60 for all three classes and a $5 booking fee. Auditions on Sunday 6 December 2026 are completely free.
Please make sure you select the correct option for your dancer when registering!
Can I compete outside of SPACE Studios while committed to a SPACE team?
6
No. SPACE team members are not permitted to participate in external dance competitions through independently choreographed, externally choreographed, or self choreographed solos, duos or teams while committed to a SPACE team.
The only exceptions are Dance NZ Made and AIMS Games competition, where participation is organised through and represents the dancer’s school.
SPACE teams are a 12 month commitment built around teamwork, collective development and the success of the group as a whole. By accepting a team position, dancers and families agree to respect the programme and the commitments that come with it, including this restriction on outside competition work.
If your dancer wishes to pursue external competitions, solos, duos or other competition opportunities outside of SPACE, we encourage them to join our SPACE Open Classes instead. These offer the opportunity to continue developing their skills and exploring choreography without the commitments of our 12 month team training programme.
What are the travel commitments for 2027 SPACE teams?
7
All SPACE team dancers must be available to travel to competition events across both the North Island and South Island of New Zealand.
During registration, you will be able to select your dancer’s travel capabilities. You can choose between:
• New Zealand Only: Available to travel to events across both the North and South Islands.
• New Zealand + Australia: Available to travel to events across both islands of New Zealand, as well as potential competition opportunities in Australia.
Please consider your family’s travel capabilities carefully before registering. Team members must be able to meet the travel commitments associated with their selected pathway.
BEFORE YOU AUDITION:
By registering for auditions, dancers and families acknowledge that joining a SPACE team is a serious 12-month commitment, not a casual after-school activity.
If offered a position, dancers and families must be prepared to commit to the full programme, including weekly training, rehearsals, weekend and school holiday commitments, financial obligations, and all SPACE team requirements.
Team placements are not guaranteed. All successful dancers and their families will be required to review and accept the SPACE team contract before confirming their position.
Please audition only if you are genuinely prepared to commit to the full experience. We are looking for dancers who are ready to invest their time, effort and focus into their development, alongside families who are willing to support the commitment required throughout the year.
If you are looking for a fun dance opportunity without the demands of a competition team, we encourage you to explore our iconic and much loved SPACE open classes instead!
